European city loved by British expats that tops the list for affordability

This popular city has been named the most affordable in the world for British expats with 78 percent of residents happy with the cost of living.

Alicante in Spain has ranked first globally for affordable housing, according to an Expat Insider survey from InterNations.

The organisation quizzed over 12,000 expats in 49 cities across the world – with Alicante ranking highly for affordability.

Properties are currently on offer for as little as £21,653 for a four-bedroom villa. In comparison, the average price for a three to four bed property in the UK in 2020 was £291,618.

For this reason, it’s clear to see why Alicante is a popular destination for expats looking to move from the UK.

As well as its affordability, the city also offers spectacular views, with the Castle of Santa Barbara towering over the harbour.

The castle is one of the city’s most popular tourist spots, offering views across the city and a ninth-century Arabic fortress to explore.

The city is also home to beautiful streets steeped in history, offering a range of shopping and eating spots.

According to data from the Spanish Bureau of Statistics (INE), 1.8 million people lived in the province of Alicante in early 2020, making it one of the most populated cities in the country.

Around 373,716 are believed to be expats. Brits are drawn to the laid-back lifestyle and seemingly limitless sunshine that Costa Blanca has to offer.

The sandy beaches are also a big selling point, with others choosing to buy holiday homes along the coast.

Due to the highly concentrated number of British expats, the city is said to be easy to find English-speaking services, including shops and restaurants.
